They chased him and gave him a warning shot but he didn't stop. So they shot him 17 times.

In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson is shot and killed by prison guards while attempting to escape from jail, not by the police. He is wrongly accused of assaulting a white woman and faces racism and injustice in the legal system.
