In reality, Mayella tried to seduce Tom, and when her father caught her, she accused Tom to cover up her actions and protect her reputation. Tom was innocent, but due to the racial prejudice of the time, he was found guilty and ultimately killed.

Mayella tried to kiss Tom Robinson and he ran away. He went in to help Mayella with her chores because he felt sorry for her. When he went inside to fix the door like she asked, she came up from behind and jumped on him saying, "I've never kissed a [n-word] before so maybe I can find out!" She then tried to kiss him but when Mr. Ewell came back and saw Mr. Robinson with her, he stormed in and Tom ran as fast as he could away. This draws the jury's attention to the fact that Tom's left arm is useless, making it highly unlikely he was Mayella's attacker. When Tom stands, Atticus asks Mayella if Tom is the man who attacked. When she responds that he is, Atticus asks, "How?"
