Yes. In the 20th century a US warship was considered US sovereign territory. On 02 August 1964 elements of the North Vietnamese Navy's 135th Torpedo Boat Squadron operating P4 torpedo boats attacked the US destroyer USS Maddox in the Tonkin Gulf. Maddox returned fire, reporting destroying or sinking one NVN vessel and recieved one hit from their 25mm machine guns. USN F8 Crusader jets from a US aircraft carrier joined the fray and also reported destroying one enemy boat. The remainder of the NVN vessels returned to their base in North Vietnam.
On 04 August 1964 it happened again, same place, same warship plus the USS Turner Joy; but thats a whole different story...
The US has never fought with a nation called "Vietnam."

Communists.
The American COLONIES belonged to Britain; America was the property of Great Britain. North or SOUTH Vietnam had no relationship to the US what so ever; SOUTH Vietnam just "happened" to be the next target of the communists. And America (United States) was an enemy of communism. When communists attacked; America responded (during the cold war).
