Yes, the Spartans were defeated by the Romans. Sparta had been in a slow decline for centuries before the Romans arrived. Roman commander Flamininus invaded Laconia and laid siege to Sparta around 195 BC. By the 2nd century BC it was nothing more than a province of Rome.

The Romans aka the Roman Legion of the Roman Republic (about 100 years pre-Cesar/pre-Roman "Empire") fought the Spartans at the Battle of Gythium in 195 BC.

Search Google with "Spartacus" Some say he was killed in the final battle, others say his body was never found, while the film "Spartacus" shows him being crucified!

It is generally accepted today that Spartacus was killed in the final battle. And no, he did not beat the Romans, the Romans beat him due to the extraordinary training of raw recruits by Crassus plus the stupidity or gullibility of Spartacus himself.

Who were Hannibal and spartacus?

The questions and answers previously given do not provide a reason for Rome's initial defeat by the army of Spartacus. The reason Rome lost the first encounter with Spartacus was Rome's expectation that Spartacus posed no serious threat and so the small force Rome sent to defeat Spartacus was defeated because Spartacus had 90,000 troops at his disposal.

Why did the Romans want to capture spartacus?

Spartacus and his band were outlaws. They rampaged across the Italian countryside, killing, raping and robbing.
