At the beginning (1949), it was meant to stop communism from spreading into war-torn western Europe. It was an anti-soviet/communism organization. Today, it's so the nations can protect each other. Why did you need NATO?
I think we need nato because if we were ever going to get attacked they may be able to help us just like they helped western europe the two times in 30 years that they were attacked.
