Dragons never did exist though there are multiple claims of them being sighted. The Chinese had a mythical dragon God that was celebrated at festivals. This dragon was a costume. No dragon fossils have ever been discovered by scientists, so there is no real proof, though many -including me- believe in dragons.

From an evolutionary standpoint, they walked the earth with dinosaurs as wyverns, and their ocean-dwelling cousins survived the K-T event. These eventually evolved into forest serpents and began sharing their world with humans. Dragons reached their peak, so to say, in the mountainous 6-limbed creature we know best, and they were eventually hunted to extinction at around the turn of the 16th century. From a Biblical standpoint, it is suggested that they were created along with every other land animal. In Job 41, God describes the creature and praises it as one of best creations, along with the leviathan (sea serpent) and behemoth (dinosaur). They likely died out shortly after the Great Flood, as their main food source had severely diminished and the animals had not repopulated quickly enough to feed them, so they starved to death at around 2000 B.C.
