Actually, in early days in the US, a lot of it did. About the only books students had were a writing primer and The Bible. A lot of early education had a lot of Bible reading, superstition, and harsh discipline. The goal of education was to teach the basics, help one be an informed citizen to be able to vote (if male) or to raise a family (if female), and make it possible to read the Bible.
