He went to Mexico to find God, gold and glory.
Hernan Cortes did go to Mexico and conquer the Aztec Empire in 1519. In later years, he did lead an expedition to Honduras, but he never went to Texas. Cortes was born in 1485 and died in 1547.
He landed on the Mexico shore, sunk his ships so none of his men could return or turn on him, then he encountered the Aztects, and defeated them. They made Mexico city there and then went south for the Incas, who were wealthy.
Cuba, or the Wet Indies. Then De Soto went on to Florida, and Cortes to Central America
He didn't discover Mexico himself, but the reason he went there was to conquer the Aztecs as he did successfully.
Hernan Cortes was not "sent" by any royalty. Cortes was born to a family of minor nobility from a very poor area of Spain known as Estremadura. When he was about 18 he went to Valencia on Spain's east coast with a view to particpating in the Italian wars. Instead about a year later he sailed for the island of Hispaniola. At that time he was 19. He was a farmer there for 6 years before he associated himself with minor authorities and began to work to increase his prospects and circle of more powerful friends. He was given increasingly important positions until he was sent to Mexico in 1519.
