If by "inisent" people you mean "innocent"...then yes. They did.

It was done by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, who traveled from Atlanta Georgia to the city of Savannah, Georgia. On the way he tore down any infrastructure and made sure to consume any supplies and burn down whatever was left unused.

Sherman also stated that any resistance was to be met with unrelenting retribution....
