What role did Captain John Smith play in the early success of the Jamestown settlement?

He basically saved the ailing colony. By 1608 half of the colonists in Jamestown had died, leaving only fifty three emaciated survivors. John Smith came to Jamestown and was elected president in September of 1608. He enforced military discipline and negotiated with the Indians for food for the colony. He later returned back to England and the colony came close to collapse again. If you want to read more about Jamestown, I'd suggest reading Paul Johnson's History of the American People pages 23-28. That's where I got my information.
