At first, John Smith had not relationship with the Native Americans in Jamestown, as he was held in prison for a previous "crime".

Later, when he emerged, he did develop a good relationship with the native people, but only after a time of exploring the area, and after several attempts by Pocahontas and others of her tribe to make a connection with the White settlers.

Smith was not that interested in helping the Native people, but he was also not as against them as the other English settlers. He had a good personality and related well to the Algonquian.

For a time, he helped them and they in turn, helped him. This led to the famous incident in which Pocahontas saved him from being killed by her people. It was not out of love, however (she was only eleven years old!).
