They were written at about the same time. They have many similarities, don't they? Dialogue in rhymed verse in both. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet becomes the comic play Pyramus and Thisbe (one of the sources of the R+J story). The interfering fairies become Mercutio's Queen Mab speech. Hermia is to be forced to marry Demetrius as Juliet is to be forced to marry Paris. Demetrius and Lysander fight; Romeo and Paris fight. Both have keywords which are celestial objects: stars in R+J and the moon in Dream.
It would be interesting to see the two plays performed with the same cast. That would really bring out the similarities.

"Romeo and Juliet" was written before "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" was written around 1595-1596, while his comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was written around 1595-1596.
