Yes, they did. In fact cats and dogs have been with man for over 5,000 years. In the 1400's many people included pets in their paintings. Many kings and queens bred dogs. The explorers had cats on ships to keep the rat population down. It is reported that there were 25 cats on Columbus's ships. Considering all the cats and the unwashed men the ships must have smelled awful.
