WWII began in 1939 and in 1940 the Germans invaded France, making agreements with Vichy France under Petain to bring North Africa under German control. Jews and other targeted minorities deciding to escape from Europe often ended in Marseille, France. Some went to Casablanca, trying to get out from there to Portugal and the USA or Canada. It was the Allied invasion of North Africa that saved those few Jews still remaining there in 1942 and 1943, when German control ended.
