Of course they did!!!
Morse code. Still used today in bad communication conditions.
The telegraph. Hence the name for telegraph code, "Morse Code." See the Related Link below for more information about Samuel F. B. Morse and the telegraph.
Morse code was used in the 1800s. It wasn't until the late 1800s that Morse code began to be used through radio communication.
Samuel Morse did not perfect anything formidable in 1837 because he had no knowledge of Joseph Henry's electric relay until he learned later of it while in England from Charles Wheatstone. It was the latter, who had, with William Fothergill Cooke, actually perfected the first commercial electric telegraph systems with the introduction of the Blackwall Railway installation in 1840. All other prior systems were basically trials. In 1844, Morse was still trying to get his system introduced in America and petitioned Congress with a trial demonstration between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Morse, who relied on Alfred Vail's expertise did not see his system commercially introduced until after 1847.
"pride and overconfidence" may be semantics regarding the mindset of 1912 seamen but altho there was a sense of security on Titanic, she was still equipped with lookouts, a wireless telegraph, a morse lamp, flares, and lifeboats.

Yes
Beginning in the 1850s, Western Union was making use of telegraphy, sending Morse code messages over long distances, by means of telegraph wires. The Bell system was not in existence as a long-distance communication system yet, so Western Union had the clear advantage. When Bell perfected telephonic communication, a person no longer needed to know Morse code in order to send a message. However, in 1877, the telephone was still in the experimental stage, whereas the telegraph was well-known and widely used.
The telegraph is still in use but it has evolved and is in use in specialized circumstances. The telephone which was invented in 1876 would have gradually replaced the telegraph in commercial usage.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegraphy
