Popcon art is art speak in the art world among emerging artists. It is a relatively new type or category of art: A hybrid of Pop art and Conceptual art, Popcon art refers to any artistic work that comments directly on American pop culture, society, politics, or media. Popcon art includes art that has elements of both pop art and conceptual art so long as its subject matter is one of these four subjects, or something related to them. In other words, there is a subject matter nexus. Popcon art would not be about a landscape or a still life, for example. Popcon art is distinguished from patriotic art or art that is nostalgic about America or Americana. It is instead usually a critique or observation of a perceived flaw, contradiction, prejudice, or similar in American society, culture, politics, or news media, often delivered with an appealing appearance (hence the reference to Pop art) while at the same time conveying an idea that does not need traditional painting or sculpture techniques (hence the reference to Contemporary art).
