In a century (a group of 100 soldiers), the 10th man in every row would be beaten by THEIR OWN teammates... So every 9 soldiers in a row, beat the 10th man. This would of been if they had run away from a battle or had not shown order in their marches whilst battling... Originally, it was the Centurion (Leader of the Century) that had to beat them but the Roman Empire introduced the idea of friends beating a "friend" to increase guilt and disable the idea of it happening again...
