Foundation did not exist in the Roman days. However, rich women did take great care about the look of their faces and used elaborate beauty masks.
Aristocratic Roman women
women liked to have be fair-skinned to show that they belonged to the leisured class and did not get dark by working outdoors. Therefore, they needed to whiten their skin. When they went outdoors, they put oils on their faces. They prepared beauty masks before putting their make up on. Before going to bed they applied sweat from sheep wool before going to bed. They bathed in donkey milk which acted as an exfoliant. This was very expensive. After a bath they put chalk powder, white marl (lime rich mud), crocodile dung, and white lead on their faces as whiteners. Beeswax, olive oil, rosewater, saffron, animal fat, tin oxide, starch, rocket, cucumber, anise, mushrooms, honey, rose leaves, poppies, myrrh, frankincense, almond oil, rosewater, lily root, water parsnip and eggs were also used as whiteners.
Other products which were used for beauty masks were juice, seeds, horns, excrement, honey, plants, placenta, marrow, vinegar, bile, animal urine, sulfur, vinegar, myrrh, incense, frankincense, ground oyster shells, onions with poultry fat, and barley with vetch (a type of broad bean); swans fat, donkey milk, gum Arabic and bean-meal were used for wrinkles; the ashes of snails were used for freckles and sores.
