There were many official days of thanksgiving in colonial America. The feast that occurred near Plymouth Rock in 1621 was not considered by the Puritans as a "thanksgiving" but rather as a prayer.

If we count the very first in Massachusetts by the Pilgrams it was 1621. Called Harvest Home it was traditioal feast after a fast. Yet, it didn't become a national holiday until 1863 when Lincoln declared the day.
Thanksgiving took place because when all the troops came home they would have a gathering. And a gathering is what the people called Thanksgiving before they came up with the name "Thanksgiving". So, when they founded the name Thanksgiving, they called it Thanksgiving instead of a gathering. I hope that helped! :)

They ate. That was the sole event as far as we know today. In "Mourt's Relation" (1622), Edward Winslow also mentions that some of the men "exercised their arms", meaning target practice. The harvest feast lasted three days, but the exact date is not recorded by Bradford or Winslow.
