Yes. The atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945 on Hiroshima. Anotherbomd was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1941. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1941. After the recent declassification of documents relating to Harry S Truman (the US president at the time of the bombings), there is evidence that Japan was already willing to surrender and the bombs were not needed. Some believe that the bombs were dropped not to win WW2, but rather to demonstrate to USSR (whom the US already saw as their next adversary, although allies during WW2) that the US had such a potent weapon.

At the time, it was universally believed that the two A-bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki hastened the end of WWII by up to a full year, and saved hundreds of thousands of American and Japanese lives.
