After the recent declassification of documents relating to Harry S Truman (the US president at the time of the bombings), there is evidence that Japan was already willing to surrender and the bombs were not needed. Some believe that the bombs were dropped not to win WW2, but rather to demonstrate to USSR (whom the US already saw as their next adversary, although allies during WW2) that the US had such a potent weapon.
