The Aztec Indians inhabited the central region of today's current country of Mexico. Many different groups and regions surrounding the Valley of Mexico can be encompassed in the Aztec definition, however Aztecs are more commonly considered to be the residents who made Tenochtilan, the capital of the empire, their home. Tenochtilan was a city situated on an island in the middle of lake Texococo. The ancient city is now the location of modern day Cuidad de Mexico, or Mexico City in the south central region of the country.

It had bad water, mosquitoes, disease, and an empire of 15000 Native Americans living there. 104 men landed there and within 6 months only 34 were alive. Disease and starvation had gotten to them.

Tenochtitlan and the Aztecs are not the exact same thing. Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztec empire. The Aztecs built the city of Tenochtitlan in the location where Mexico City is currently located.

The Spanish pretty much tried to plunder the Aztecs, resulting in their city in ruins after they finally managed to drive them again. If the Spanish did not try to conquer them for their gold, the Aztecs might just have grown out to become the dominant empire in North America.
