The British didn't so much "lose" as they "failed to win". I know that sounds like the same thing, but there's a subtle difference... basically they reached a point at which they realized that winning the war would cost more than they were willing to expend.

The reason King George and Parliament did not give the American colonists representation in the legislature is because they did not consider the colonists citizens of England, but rather inhabitants of a British colony.
