Had they but known they were actually winning the fight against the RAF by bombing the airfields in SE England. By bombing the industrial targets as they saw them the Germans gave the RAF time to reorganise & change tactics, hopefully the Germans thought,reducing the civillian will to continue in the war. This simply was not the case then, nor was it when the British & US bombed Germany later in the war. (Which raises the question why try to destroy the German civillian will to resist when the Germans were unable to reduce the British ?) The trerm Blitz should not be confused with Blitzkreig which is the 'Lightning war', a combination of Panzer and Luftwaffe tactics.

They tried to destroy the Royal Army Air Force bases and planes. They failed to understand the Brits were churning out 400 planes a month and they did not know where those plane manufacturing places were. They tried to destroy communication equipment, train tracks and anything that had to do with the military. The Brits were not the only once who suffered this way. France, Belgium and the Netherlands suffered too. Poor Poland was invaded and they took many of the Poles out of their country and put them into concentration camps. Some were killed before they even made it to Germany. Then they moved Germans into Poland.

The Germans, led by Adolph Hitler, bombed London in their quest to conquer most of Europe. World War II was fought to prevent his succeeding, but it was a close thing for awhile. Personal hate didn't really seem to be the main issue. The German actually had little ambition towards England. Their objective was to conquer the Slavic lands (Slovakia, Poland, Russia) for living room. That is why they never invaded England (their enemy) and invaded Russia (their friend). The Germans actually made strenuous efforts to reconcile with England. Rudolph Hess's 'desertion' to the west was actually one such attempt. England declared war on Germany (not the other way around) when Germany invaded Poland. The bombing of London was an attempt by the Germans to subdue England - bring it into compliance with Germany.
