The Gospels, along with the rest of the New Testament, have been compared to the many manuscripts we have available to test if the text has changed over time. It has been found to be over 99 percent pure, with the remaining errors being minor in nature.

Yes. All the books of The Bible evolved over time. Some of the changes were interpolations added by editors who saw ways to improve the original message of the gospel, while others were copyists' errors that crept into the original and became accepted. Even the translation into English has resulted in subtle changes.

Changes took place, often concurrently, in different areas of the empire. Some changes were strongly supported for a while in one region, but not being accepted in other regions, fell out of favour and do not form part of the modern version of the Book of Matthew. For example, certain old Latin manuscripts add another miraculous happening, "and a great light shone around" to Matthew 3:15, but this is is not included in modern versions. We can see a few of these changes that are found in Codex Sinaiticus, a fourth century manuscript.

What was the approximate date of Matthew's Gospel?

It is the almost universal consensus of biblical scholars that Matthew's Gospel was substantially based on Mark's Gospel. Since Mark is believed to have been written approximately 70 CE, Matthew must therefore have been written some time later. The consensus is that it was written in the 80s of the first century.

What do Catholics consider the oldest gospel?

Originally, St. Matthew's Gospel was considered the first Gospel. However, today that status is in question. Matthew is said to have written the Gospel in Hebrew but that text disappeared over time and was lost to history. A Gospel of Matthew in Greek is still extant but it is unknown if this was a translation of the original Hebrew Gospel or was a different version. Matthew's Gospel includes the version written by Mark almost in its entirety so Matthew may have borrowed extensively from Mark's Gospel and added to it from his own personal observations and remembrances. That would mean that Mark is the author of the oldest Gospel.

Did Matthews great use of the old testament prophecies give greater appeal to the gentiles?

Not so very much at first. Matthew's gospel was written more to the Jew. perhaps the Hellenistic Jews. The Gentiles would have had a more difficult time reading Matthew's gospel as Matthew cited Jewish cites, namesand Jewish customs without explaining them. The Gentile would have had to put in much research in reading Matthew's gospel. Today there is no problem in reading Matthew because most of the research has already been done for the reader.

Where is Joseph in Matthew's gospel?

Joseph: The name is in Matthew's gospel eleven times:Ch 1, 5xCh 2, 2xCh 13, 1xCh 27, 2xbut it is not the same person every time! The early references are to Joseph, husband of Mary and step-father of Jesus.Jesus had a brother Joses, mentioned in Matthew 13.Joseph of Arimathea was a follower of Jesus, and he is mentioned in chapter 27.

When was Matthew's Gospel written?

All the New Testament gospels were actually anonymous until attributed by the second-century Church Fathers to the apostles whose names they now bear. On that score, we have no reason to believe that it was Matthew who wrote the Gospel, and scholars say it could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events portrayed.Matthew's Gospel is believed to have been written in the eighties of the first century, although Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) suggests that several years should be allowed either side of that decade.Another Answer:The book of Matthew was written by Matthew, also called Levi, the tax collector. He wrote it probably between A.D. 60 and 70.One thing is for sure: it was not written after 70AD. Because if it was then Matthew would had been bragging in his gospels about the fulfillment of the prophecy of Jesus that the great temple in Jerusalem will be destroyed totally. As you can see in the gospels, they always say "as a fulfillment of what the prophets wrote".

Where is the Gospel of Jesus...We have many gospels but no gospel of Jesus. Why?

Answer #1:Luke 19:10 - for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.Jesus came into the world for a specific purpose; to reveal God's plan for the reconciliation of mankind and offer Himself as the atoning sacrifice. His mission would not have been served had He spent His time writing a book about Himself; others could (and did) do just that. Answer #2:The true gospel IS the gospel of Jesus Christ. As far as anyone knows, Jesus was not a writer. He was someone who spoke and demonstrated, but never wrote. And the "gospels" we have in the Bible are more accurately known as "gospel accounts" -- such as "The Gospel [of Jesus Christ] According To Matthew (or Mark, or Luke, or John)." So strictly speaking, there is not a Gospel of Matthew, or a Gospel of John -- it's just easier to say "Matthew's Gospel" or "John's Gospel." But really, it's the Gospel of Jesus that each one of those Apostles wrote about.

Why isn't Mark's Gospel first if it was written first?

Opinion/ Matthew's Gospel is listed first because it forms the perfect bridge between the Old and New Testament, and the genealogies listed at the beginning form a natural transition between the two. In addition, Matthew's arrangement presents the teachings of Jesus in well organised form.
