They made a pact with God to follow the entire Torah, including the Ten Commandments.
People make Bat Mitzvahs to celebrate the acceptance of the commandments. In total, there are 613 commandments. A party is not really necessary, but now it is just what people do.
I would guess more than 90% of Christians believe in the 10 commandments of the Old Testament, because they were conditioned to believe and follow the Bible unquestioned. But in closer inspection of the verses, I came to the conclusion that the 10 Commandments is exclusive only to the Hebrew Slaves in Egypt. Read the first Commandment in full. It was given to the Hebrew slaves only and not to any other tribe. It also say not to covet thy neighbor's (member of own tribe) house, ass (donkey), wife, slaves, etc. But it's OK to take other tribesmen's possession their wives, daughters, sons and even their life. If you really want to study the 10 Commandments, Read the book "The Ten Commandments" by Joseph Lewis. The space alloted in this answer page is too limited to answer the questioner's inquiry. BTW, I'm also a Christian and I follow Jesus' commandments as written in MT 19:17-19, MK 10:19 & LK 18:20, not the 10 Commandments of the Hebrews.
You don't make the commandments. They are given to you at the beginning of chapter 3.
