yes, and that may be partof why the Americans won in the revolution: because they had more of a motive than just money.

NO. Hessians were regular soldiers and were not paid extra to fight in America; thus, they were not truly mercenaries but auxiliary troops. All British monetary compensation went to the Prince of Hess, not to the troops themselves.
