The Italians wound up on the winning side. But they did not by their own efforts "win the war", or contribute very much to the victory. The Italians fought mostly against their old enemy, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on a front in northern Italy, hoping to emerge from the war with territorial gains in the north wrested from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The Italians last offensive, at Caporetto, swiftly turned into a disaster. The Italians quickly lost almost 350,000 men, over 300,000 of whom were captured. Only Austrian inability to follow up prevented an even greater catastrophe.
