Traditionally the Navajo lived in small family groupings on the wife's mother's land (maternal clan). They tended to live spread out across the country side. They were herders (and farmers) in a dry climate so they needed a lot of space for the sheep.

The is a popular joke on the Navajo Nation:

A white person says we are very close to grandma, we visit her on the holidays by driving or taking a plane. The Navajo says we are very close to grandma, she lives in a hogan about two miles down that dirt road and take a right at the boot in the juniper tree. The Zuni ( or Hopi) says, we are NOT very close to grandma , she lives way at the other end of the house.
