New york was originally new amsterdam. So yes, they did have land in n america. But the dutch are a more fiscally minded people, and those that had settled in new amsterdam werent willing to work hard enough to build a thriving city when there wasnt wealth readily abailable to them. So when the british showe up, they just sort of took new amsterdam without much of a fight, named it new york. Then went about their merry way.
