The Ottoman Empire grew larger and stronger from its beginnings in the 1000s to the mid 1600s. From the mid-1600s to its eventual elimination in 1924, it became smaller and weaker.

The most powerful Islamic States in history are the Abbassid Caliphate, the Ottoman Sultanate, and the Mughal Kingdom of India. The Abbassid Caliphate was based out of Iraq and extended across the entire Arab World except Morocco at its height. (The Umayyad Caliphate was larger, but existed for a very short time.) The Ottoman Sultanate controlled the Balkans region of Europe, the central parts of the Middle East and parts of North Africa. It was based in Turkey. The Mughal Kingdom controlled the northern half of India and most of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The Armenians demanded their rights, both in the Russian Empire and in the Ottoman Empire on multiple occasions, specifically their right to practice their religion freely and to organize themselves autonomously or independently of the larger empire. Almost consistently when they demanded these rights, especially the right to political autonomy, they came under fire from the ruling empire. However, this violence erupted far more often on the Ottoman side since the Armenians were a useful pawn for the Russians in their attempts to conquer more Ottoman territory.
The Roman Empire was larger and surrounded the Ottoman empire at one time, however this inspired one of the Ottoman's Sultans (His name is evading me right now) to conquer a great deal of the Eastern Roman Empire's land. At that time the Ottoman Empire was larger. Currently though, both have fallen, so they're about even.
