The Soviet Union did not exist during WW I. It only came into being in 1922. But the Russian Empire (as it was then) did fight against the Germans. It was not a success, and Russia had to sue for peace in 1917.

In many cases it was a matter of fighting or dying on the spot. Operation Barbaross ripped into great portions of the Soviet Heartland without mercy. Foodstufs and livestock were confiscated and even the possession of seedgrain or a quirn was an offense punishable by death. Hangings became a daily ritual. The loss of the civilian population of the Soviet Union was equalled only by the Chinese. Jewish centers were the worst damaged, but in truth, Germany was an equal opportunity destroyer. A lack of subservience meeted out a death penalty. Holding a leadership posoition in an over-run area gave you a death sentence. Resistance of any kind was signed your own death warrent. An accusation of being a partisan warrented instant death. These were brutal times with a cadre of right wing extremists on hand who dealt out death and retribution at every opportunity.

Indeed it did. As far as I'm aware, the USSR primarily fought against the Germans alongside the allied powers (who would later become their adversaries in the near future)
