The Soviet Union did not exist during WW I. It only came into being in 1922. But the Russian Empire (as it was then) did fight against the Germans. It was not a success, and Russia had to sue for peace in 1917.
In many cases it was a matter of fighting or dying on the spot. Operation Barbaross ripped into great portions of the Soviet Heartland without mercy. Foodstufs and livestock were confiscated and even the possession of seedgrain or a quirn was an offense punishable by death. Hangings became a daily ritual. The loss of the civilian population of the Soviet Union was equalled only by the Chinese. Jewish centers were the worst damaged, but in truth, Germany was an equal opportunity destroyer. A lack of subservience meeted out a death penalty. Holding a leadership posoition in an over-run area gave you a death sentence. Resistance of any kind was signed your own death warrent. An accusation of being a partisan warrented instant death. These were brutal times with a cadre of right wing extremists on hand who dealt out death and retribution at every opportunity.
Indeed it did. As far as I'm aware, the USSR primarily fought against the Germans alongside the allied powers (who would later become their adversaries in the near future)

United States and Soviet Union were allies during World War II and there was high admiration in United States for Soviet contribution in the war.
The Soviet Union's (and more specifically, Joseph Stalin's) goals during World War II were two-fold. First, they wanted to destroy their most dangerous rival and belligerent, Nazi Germany. Secondly, they wished to expand their Soviet Communist system to control as many people and resources as possible.
During World War II, ordinary citizens in the Soviet Union showed remarkable obedience to Stalin's ideas and orders for mainly two reasons. First, very severe repercussions would follow from disobedience. Second, soon after the Germans invaded (in 1941), it became clear that the Germans were not interested in liberating Soviet people but, rather, intent on enslaving them.

Labor unions realized how good they really had it after World War 1. When the recession hit, they recruited more members. There were new laws put into play that benefited unions and that made for better working conditions for unions.
We still remember about some US citizens that really were fighting against the nazism as Soviet allies. America doesn't remember the main role of the Soviet nation in the Winning in the World War II. Ok, who cares. But we do remember about Americans.
