Snipers played a role in the US Civil War, just as they did in the Napoleonic wars. On both sides of the war they were thoroughly trained in the art and science of long range marksmanship. And they were armed with the finest rifles available. Such rifles were the English Kerr or Whitworth. The rifles were slow to load and had delicate sights which overcame the loading problem. And, normally that was not a problem as the snipers were not in the main battle field, and hidden from view. Even misses were a drama for infantrymen and these soldiers learned to dread snipers. The fear was widespread among the ranks of both sides and the fears of the infantrymen were disproportionate to their actual numbers and effectiveness.
Yes, but unlike the Vietnam War, snipers in the Civil War were often referred to as Sharpshooters.
Each side in the US Civil War used snipers. They were highly trained but few in number. Their existence, however, caused soldiers on each side of the war to be fearful of being a sniper target.
Yes, but unlike the Vietnam War, snipers in the Civil War were often referred to as "Sharpshooters."
Possibly. In the American Civil War, both sides had snipers using scoped rifles. If armies did not have snipers in 1912, it was not because sniping was not yet invented.
The US does not give out information on SEAL snipers missions. They are all classified.
