The US sent over soldiers to Germany for fear that a war was going to break out-actually there were a few cases when a war almost did break out. They kept soldiers over there for many years to defend the West (which was the Us's France's and the UK's-they each had a sector).

Yes the Us did know about the Berlin Wall. They were very aware and sent in American soldiers to protect the West Germans, making the Germans adore the Americans since the Soviets wanted expansion and could have started another war to get more territory.
