That's a "chicken or the egg" question. The events began to unfold when it was discovered the Soviets had built missile launching sites in Cuba. Then a Soviet freighter was discovered steaming to Cuba with what appeared to missiles on deck. Only then, did the US decided to set up a blockade to stop the freighter's arrival, which precipitated the show down between Kennedy and Kruschev. So I would say the Soviets started it.
The Cuban missile crisis in the early 1960's.
1-could start a world war 2-cubans would've died
Nuclear War did NOT start in 1962. If it had we wouldn't be here and this web site wouldn't exist. We got very close to it with the Cuban Missile Crisis, but it didn't happen.
Long story short, It all happened with the Bay of Pigs fiasco to remove Castro from power by using anti-Castro refugees to stage a revolt but it failed. Later a U-2 captured photos of Soviet missiles bases in Cuba but in a larger sense. Kennedy declared a naval blockade on Cuba and pressed Khruschev to take the nukes from Cuba but He refused. Kennedy mobilized the military for a possible invasion of Cuba. He probably knew the Soviets would fire its warheads from Cuba to hit Washington, New York, And Miami, etc. Also start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. On October 27th, Khruschev agreed to take the missiles from Cuba in secret they did it if Kennedy took the missiles from Turkey pointed at the USSR.
Answer this question… Any conflict between the superpowers had the potential to become a nuclear war.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States armed forces were at their highest state of readiness ever and Soviet field commanders in Cuba were prepared to use battlefield nuclear weapons to defend the island if it was invaded. Luckily, thanks to the bravery of two men, President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, war was averted. In the related links box below, I posted the wikipedia Cuban Missile Crisis article for more information.

Because it was going to be the start of World War 3 which would wipe out everything and everyone with all the nucleur missles used
Because of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Castro wanted to start nuclear war because he believed that the US would nuke him first. So Fidel wrote a letter to Nikita Sergeyevich Krushchev that basically said that if there was going to be a nuclear war, Russia should launch their missiles first. Luckily Krushchev didnt agree with him (that was the Cuban Missile crisis), and everyone thought he was insane for wanting to start nuclear war.
During President Kennedy's Presidency.

Ships from the Soviet Union had been bringing nuclear weapons to Cuba. Since Cuba is only 90 miles away from Miami, the weapons could easily hit the mainland of the United States. The U.S. was concerned, so they prepared to stop the Soviets from entering into Cuba. When the Soviets got word that the U.S. was planning to stop them, they turned around and went back home.
