Humans have not set foot on mars, however, I believe they have sent several robot rovers. Among other unmanned craft sent to Mars, the "Viking" rover landed on Mars and did some basic experiments in about 1976 or 1977.
The Viking program was a pair of probes launched in 1975, Viking I and Viking II, which were both sent to land on Mars. They ran a series of experiments while on the planet, Viking I operated for just over 3 and a half years until it suffered battery failure. Viking II operated for just over six years, unfortunately human error caused its antenna to stop working, and it could no longer communicate.
The Mars Rover has explored Mars and "Spirit" is the spacecraft that was sent on November 2011 and is going to Mars.
Mars has been explored by telescopes, satellites, probes, landers and a few rovers. No human has ever set foot on Mars so far.
