Ingólfr Arnarson, a Norwegian Norseman was the first man to permanently settle Iceland in 874 AD.
(He is known as Ingólfur Arnarson in Modern Icelandic and Ingolf Arnarson in Norwegian)
Scientists call the first people to live on Greenland the First Paleo-Esquimos.
The second group of people are called the Second Paleo-Esquimos, and the third group of people were the Thule-Inuit people. The Inuit people now populate Alaska and down the Pacific coast to the neighborhood of Vancouver. They are called esquimos, but really aren't.

The vikings told the europeans that they were going to Iceland. And by 'Iceland' they ment the small island by Greenland. At the time Greenland didn't have its name, so the europeans went to Greenland because the vikings described it as 'Iceland' and since Greenland is a very icy island. When they arrived, there were no vikings found. It was the other way around_the vikings went to Iceland, they must have named the smaller island Iceland to trick the europeans to go to Greenland.
