Overall, the answer is no. This is because in total, it estimate that 175,000 lives were lost. The Atomic Bombs would of saved about 45,000 lives but it would cost 220,000 lives. However, this argument with the use of Atomic Bombs was necessary and a effective way to end World War 2 in the pacific and overall.

That depends on your point of view. It may have been possible to win without it, but if I remember correctly the projected Allied casualties from a direct attack on the mainland were around 100,000.

America used the nuke to avoid all those losses.

On the other hand, in it's 1946 report, the US Strategic Bombing Survey rejected the idea that Japan gave up because of the atomic bombs, instead air supremacy and the exploitation thereof over Japan proper were the major determinants of the timing of Japanese surrender without the need for a land invasion.

The report notes that:

Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts, and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey's opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945, and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.

Many American military commanders from the Air Force (like General Curtis LeMay), the Army (like General Douglas MacArthur), and the Navy (like Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz) have given public statements to the same effect as this report.

But possessing an Atomic Bomb gives you more responsibility even today America cries that the neuclear bomb ability in other coutnries is fatal for humanity etc. But America failes to recall this bloody tradition was started by Americans themselves.
