The first known meeting with white people for the Blackfoot came in 1806 by means of the Lewis and Clark expedition. They embarked on mapping the Missouri River for the United States government and were confronted by Blackfoot warriors. The warriors confronted some men that Lewis was leading, and he explained to them that the United States government wanted peace with all Indian nations. The warriors knew they traded guns to their enemies, the Shoshone, and the Nez Perce. Out of fear, they tried to take guns from Lewis' men but they killed two warriors and scared the others off.

For three decades, beginning in 1806, the Blackfoot prevented American and Canadian settlements from forming in their territory. They signed their first treaty with the U.S. in 1855, after which they were forced into farming and cattle raising.
