The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was a very resilient empire that lasted from Late Antiquity into the Middle Ages. Throughout much of its existence, the Byzantine Empire was the most powerful force in Europe in cultural, military, and economic terms. During its decline it began losing some of its lands to foreign hands. At one point, for example, it had to recapture the Asia Minor region, though much of its land was conquered by the Arabs.
Rome was recaptured in December, 536, from the Ostrogothic king Witigis. The Byzantine general Belisarius invaded the Italian peninsula earlier that year.
The crusades, originally intended to save the Byzantine Empire, among other things, failed to do this and hastened its decline instead. The crusaders sacked Byzantine cities and eventually captured Constantinople in 1204. They then used Constantinople as the capital of what is called the Latin Empire, which it remained, until the Byzantines managed to recapture it in 1264. The Byzantine Empire never really recovered from this, though it held on for almost another 200 years.
