The colonists held the Boston Tea Party because of the Tea Act, which stated that only the East India Company could sell tea in the colonies, and this was taxed three pence per pound.
The colonists were outraged when the British taxed the colonists (after the French Indian War) crazy amounts. The British had a large tax on the colonists favorite drink, tea. So the colonists dumped a ton of tea off a British ship in Boston Harbor to make the point that they did not want to be taxed so heavily.
The purpose of the Boston Tea Party, was to show the British government that the colonists were mad that they were being taxed on Tea. So a group of men called the Sons of Liberty, threw 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor, to show their anger.
The colonists destroyed all of the tea (the Boston tea party), Making the British mad because not only were they in debt already but now they were millions of dollars in debt because of the colonists.
