Carribean Islanders were enslaved. Under English common law individuals from non-Christian countries could be taken as slaves after 1705. By 1720 the enslaved population of South Carolina was about 65 percent of the total population of the Colony, The slave trade in what would become the United States was first ended in Rhode Island in 1774. No slavery was not ended just the importation of new slaves to the colonies. Georgia ended the importation of new slaves in 1798 but slavery continued.
