Of course. The design of the drill had to be adapted to the peculiar design of the dominate life form on that planet.

This life form, known as "man", has a structure like no other in the universe. It has an internal structure, known as "bones", which render the life form rather inflexible. It has appendeges known as "hands" which are the primary implement handling structures and these "hands" have limited flexibility. So the cordless drill had to be made rigid so that the "hands" could manipulate it correctly. Our universal drill could not be manipulated by these creatures because of it's fluid form.

Like most implements in common use today, the cordless drill for "man" had to be adapted to fit their peculiar structure. It would be the equivalent of handing a youngling a pressure yorp and expecting it to know how to work it. "Man" is good at manipulating his environment, but he is not experienced with psionic power sources. So the drill had to have a non-morphing case and a limited power source.

The adaptation is crude and very limited, but "Man" thinks that it is a vast improvement over the previous versions that we gave him. This Earth experiment is very absorbing and enlightening! This creature can eventually become part of the greater community, given its intelligence. However this researcher has reservations about its social structure and its peculiar desire for dominance over its fellow creatures.

ALTERNATE ANSWER

the question asker may be more intelligent that we think. Cordless drills were designed for use in space by astronauts, in space suits. they originally were just cylindrical in shape, with no 90deg bend we have today, and were obviously adapted so that humans without space suits could use them.
