The freedom was won by the Americans in the Revolutionary War against the British by creating the Declaration of Independence in 1776, one year after the war started. The two sides continued to fight for a long period of time until the document written by the forefathers of Americans today was finally signed back to them on July 4, 1783. This day of freedom, celebrated by Americans from Maine to California was named Independence Day or later know as the Fourth of July.
