Not sure if this was fact or something my father read in fiction, but he told me once that Gestapo trainees were given a dog when they began training. Whatever they were given to eat or drink they had to share with the dog. They slept with it, cleaned it and it was part of their uniform. If the dog died, they were kicked out. Upon graduation, as you can already imagine, they were told to but a bullet in the back of its head, something that was their only contact with emotion for their whole training. Have not found a story like this, but I can see the Nazis doing this with out hesitation
