The Ingalls family moved to South Dakota in 1879, and Laura mostly remained there until 1894, when she and her husband Almanzo moved to Mansfield, Missouri. They had lived briefly at Almanzo's parents home in Minnesota and then Florida for a year or two after a series of personal tragedies before returning to De Smet briefly during this period.

When Laura Ingalls Wilder was a child, her family lived in South Dakota. Later in her life, Laura's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, urged Laura to write down all the stories she had been telling about her childhood. Thus, the "Little House" series of books was written, several of them taking place in South Dakota, and that is how Laura became famous in South Dakota.

Both. They lived in Iowa only one year, but the family settled in what is now South Dakota when Laura was 12, and Laura's mother and father spent the rest of their lives there. Laura and Almanzo tried farming for five disastrous years in South Dakota, but eventually founded a farm in Missouri where they prospered.
