1st AnswerKnights were nobles and they were given power, riches, and land by the king . 2nd AnswerKnights were often the younger sons of nobles who did not inherit estates of their own. Since this was the case, mercenary knights were common through the middle ages. They had grooms and other servants, who they needed to pay, and they provided their own horses, armor, and weapons, all of which cost money. They were paid in cash. At the beginning of the 14th century they were paid 2 to 4 shillings per day, about twelve times the pay of a common soldier. If they were successful as knights, they got rewarded in addition. Many knights were given manors in exchange for their support of the king or overlord. Some knights worked for a living and were paid in money, and this was particularly true of knights who were currently engaged in a war or other military matter or who had lost their manors in one way or another.
