While not ending the Great Depression, the New Deal measures did help put people back to work and did restore confidence in the government and economy. The New Deal was very expensive and the federal budget and deficit continued to increase.
The growth of the federal government and the corresponding cost to maintain those new governmental agencies were major arguments against the New Deal. From FDR's New Deal to the present, the federal government has continued to grow, assume an active role in the daily lives of citizens, and to cost more in the form of taxes, and to spend more on domestic and foreign affairs. Many politicians, economists, and students of government did not favor such increases.
