No, most of the people paid attention to the warning signs and left. According to the most recent guestimates, it seems that no more than 2,000 people would have died. Estimates of the total population of Pompeii vary, but between 20,000 and 30,000 is usually given. If no more than 2,000 people lost their lives, this was a very small part of the population.

Not to say that there were not wealthy people living in Pompeii, there were, just as in any other city, but they were generally the people who made their wealth in Pompeii and so belonged to the city's upper class. The wealthy went to the city of Herculaneum or to Stabiae or Oplontis, which were resort towns.
