In historical times they were a limited democracy - they had to be of course - if they weren't given a vote, it would be difficult to get them to fight for the decisions of oligarchs.
The Athenian government was trying to be a democracy but did not succeed. The Spartans government was entirely different. The Spartans had an Oligarchy and a Monarchy. An Oligarchy is a government or council ruled by few people.
Well, There were many different governments in greece for example sparta was a oligarchy. In athens it was a direct democracy. The minoans and micinians were both a monarchy. monarchy: One ruler oligarchy: a couple of people with military or government influence ruled direct democracy: a group ruled but the people had a say
Sparta used an oligarchy as their form of government. This means that there was a few people who ruled.
Ancient Athens type of government was democracy. They had a democratic rule.
monarchy oligarchy tyranny democracy thank u :)
if you think that Sparta is an oligarchy, you are wrong. Sparta is unable to have an oligarchy because they have two kings that have no power to the people. kind of like Great Britain. The only difference is that Great Britain has a constitution and Sparta doesn't. An example of an oligarchy is not known at this time. Sparta is also not a monarchy because it has TWO kings instead of one. if i could make up a word for Spartas government... it would be POLARCHY because Sparta has more than one king. when i find out the answer, i will update this answer.
In a democracy people vote, whereas in an autocracy or oligarchy, they do not vote. Since any influence by voting, however minute, is present in a democracy and absent from an autocracy or oligarchy, it gives more power to the voter by dint of being greater than zero.
The Peloponnesian war was Between Athens and Sparta. Sparta was jealous of Athens and hated their idea of democracy. Sparta was strong on land, Athens at sea. But in the end, Sparta won and established an Oligarchy called the 30 tyrants. But 50 years later when Sparta was still weak from fighting Athens, a kingdom to the north called Macedonia, led by Alexander the Great, conquered Sparta.
Democracy is run by the people. The prefix demo means people. This is the way a democracy was designed to run.

Sparta was cool. they killed people. Athens was a bunch of panzies. While they did kill people, they also were the first direct democracy. ^^ Not entirely helpful, but sadly true. In Sparta they had what we'd call a Constitutional Monarchy. This means that the King of Sparta would basically be a figure-head for the people to rally around; he didn't have any real power (except in wars I think). Athens however was the origins of Democracy. In Athens though they practised Direct Democracy, which is the citizens of Athens going and voting on particular issues themselves instead of having MPs, or Senators doing it for them. In most countries that have a Democracy, there is a Representative Democracy which involves voting a person to represent you in the government/parliament/senate. So... Sparta = Constitutional Monarchy Athens = Direct Democracy
